Privacy Policy
The short version: there are no accounts, ads, analytics or tracking. We don't set cookies. The words you type are checked in your own browser and are never sent to us. When a game ends, your score is added to an anonymous tally so we can show how you compare with other players. Nothing that identifies you is stored.
Who we are
Big Hungry (“the game”, “we”, “us”) is a free browser word game. If you have a question about this policy, contact us at bighungrysomething@gmail.com.
Information we collect
We don't ask you for any personal information and we don't have user accounts. The game runs in your browser: the dictionary is downloaded with the page, and every word you type is checked on your device. The words you type are never sent to us or anyone else.
The only game data that leaves your device is a short summary of each finished game, used for the score curve described in the next section.
Score data for the bell curve
The final screen shows a curve of how other players scored and what percentage of them you beat. To build it:
- What's sent: the first time you finish each day's Daily or Bonus game, the game sends our server which kind it was (Daily, Bonus or Zen Mode), the date, and the length of each word you played. The words themselves are not sent. In Big Hungry Cartographer, each finished Daily or Unlimited game sends which kind it was, the date, and the points you scored in each round; the countries themselves are not sent. Looking at a scoreboard again later only fetches the current counts and sends nothing about your game, and neither does a game where nothing was played in the last three rounds (usually one that was left unfinished).
- What's kept: the server works out your score from those numbers and adds one to a count of how many games landed in that 20-point range, such as “700–719”. Separate counts are kept for each Daily puzzle, for all Daily puzzles combined, for all Bonus games combined and for all Zen Mode games combined, and Cartographer has its own counts for its Daily and Unlimited games. Those counts are the only thing stored.
- What's not kept: your individual score, the words you played, your IP address, or anything else that could identify you or link one game to another.
- What comes back: the server returns the current counts, and the game draws the curve from them in your browser.
We use this data only to show players how they compare with each other. Because the counts are anonymous, there's no way to pick out or remove one player's games. As with any request to a website, our hosting provider handles your connection to the server (see “Third-party services”). The counts are stored in a database run by Upstash.
Information stored on your device
To give everyone one scored try at each day's Daily and Bonus games, the game saves a small record for each one in your
browser's local storage, under keys like bhf-daily-2026-10-08 and bhf-daily-2026-10-08-b1.
Each record contains:
- your score for that puzzle,
- whether you finished it, and
- the word (or country) you played each round and the points it earned, so the game can show you that day's scoreboard again.
These records stay on your device and are never sent to us. They're needed for the games you choose to play, so we don't ask for separate consent. You can delete them at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this website.
The game also remembers your settings: whether you turned the sound off (under the key bh-sound) and whether you chose the simple look (under bh-look), so they stay that way next time.
Cookies
The game doesn't set any cookies, and we don't use advertising, analytics or tracking tools of any kind.
Clipboard
When you press Copy result after a Daily or Bonus game, the game writes a short summary of your result (puzzle number, one square per round and your score) to your clipboard so you can paste it wherever you like. The game never reads your clipboard.
Third-party services
Like any website, loading the game means your browser connects to the servers that deliver it. Those providers automatically receive technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the time of the request.
- Vercel hosts the website. Vercel may keep short-lived server logs for security and reliability. See Vercel's Privacy Policy.
- Google Fonts supplies the game's title font. Your browser downloads it from Google's servers. See Google's Privacy Policy and the Google Fonts privacy FAQ.
- jsDelivr supplies the country flag pictures in Big Hungry Cartographer. Your browser downloads them from jsDelivr's servers. See jsDelivr's Privacy Policy.
- Upstash stores the anonymous score counts described above. Only the counts are stored there. See Upstash's Privacy Policy.
We don't sell or share your personal information, and we don't receive personal information from these providers.
Children
The game contains crude language and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA/CPRA in California), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you, and to object to or restrict how it's used. Because we don't collect or store personal information ourselves, there's normally nothing for us to hand over or delete. The score counts are anonymous and can't be traced back to you, and the daily record on your device is yours to keep or clear. If you have a request or concern, contact us at the address above. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the game handles information, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top.
